While Bloodstone is one of several secondary stones for February, March, and April, it is also associated with several chakras. Its status as a secondary stone doesn’t mean Bloodstone isn’t a powerful and helpful stone. However, because it’s usually a secondary stone, it tends to get overlooked, so here are some fun facts about Bloodstone.

Bloodstone is a cryptocrystalline, meaning the rock is composed of such tiny particles that its crystalline structure is not visible, even under a microscope. While it’s often called Blood Jasper, it’s not always a jasper. Sometimes it’s more of a Chalcedony, a much broader classification than Jasper alone. The red spots are caused by hematite within the stone.

Many legends surround bloodstone. In Greek, Bloodstone is called heliotrope, which means sun turning, and it was once believed that placing the stone in water made the sun turn red.  Warriors carried it into battle for protection, and one of the oldest stories about the formation of Bloodstone centers on the crucifixion of Christ. According to this legend, the red in the Bloodstone is where the blood of Christ fell on the stones.

In addition, the ancient Egyptians used the stones to increase inner strength. Roman soldiers carried bloodstone into battle because of its reputed ability to slow bleeding and aid wound healing. The iron oxide is a known astringent, so that may have helped.

Bloodstone is a type of Jasper used throughout history in divination, to make rain, and for protection. The Babylonians engraved bloodstone for divination, healing, and fertility. It can also help you cleanse yourself of those things that no longer serve you, and its ruling planet, Mars, represents will-power, persistence, and courage.
